NAFDAC Uncovers Counterfeit Drugs Hidden In Plumbing Materials’ Shops in Onitsha Market
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered large quantities of counterfeit and prohibited drugs hidden inside plumbing materials’ shops at the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market in Anambra State. The operation is part of an ongoing crackdown on the market, which had been recently shut down by regulatory and security agencies due to alleged illegal pharmaceutical dealings.
In a statement released on X, NAFDAC officials revealed that they had seized two trailer loads of unregistered narcotics, banned tramadol, and counterfeit drugs, all concealed within the non-drug sections of the market. This discovery was made following intelligence reports, despite earlier claims by traders that NAFDAC was unfairly targeting these non-drug areas.
NAFDAC also underscored the security risks involved in the operation, recalling a violent attack on its officials and police officers during a similar raid three years ago. “Heightened security measures were necessary due to a past incident three years ago when NAFDAC officials and police officers were attacked and narrowly escaped death while conducting a similar raid,” the agency stated.
The agency expressed gratitude to the National Security Adviser (NSA), acknowledging the critical role played in ensuring the success of the operation. “Without the support of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the progress made in this operation would not have been possible,” NAFDAC added.
The crackdown has led to the seizure of illicit drugs worth billions of naira. Many of these drugs were being repackaged and revalidated under false claims before being sold to unsuspecting consumers. Over the course of the operation, NAFDAC has reportedly removed at least 10 fully loaded 40-foot trucks filled with fake, substandard, and adulterated drugs from the market, some bearing counterfeit NAFDAC approval labels.
The ongoing efforts by NAFDAC highlight the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and eliminating illegal drug trade activities.
