1 Year Anniversary: Aiyedatiwa Extends Mercy To 43 Prisoners
In commemoration of the first anniversary of his inauguration as the 7th elected governor of Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted clemency to 43 convicts in the state.
The decision, which reflects the governor’s commitment to reformative justice, was based on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN.
A statement released by Aiyedatiwa’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, revealed that the Governor’s gesture aligns with his vision for humane governance and social justice. The statement read, “As part of this initiative, the Governor has ordered the outright release of 8 individuals who were previously incarcerated.”
In addition to this, 15 condemned inmates, who were sentenced to death by hanging, have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms, while 20 other prisoners serving life sentences had their terms adjusted to more lenient sentences.
The statement further emphasized that this move is a reflection of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances, rehabilitation, and the potential for transformation. “This decision is a testament to the Governor’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation,” it noted, adding that the action showcases the Governor’s responsibility in ensuring that the justice system reflects mercy and humanity.
The Governor’s decision also highlights his ongoing efforts to address challenges within the penal system and promote the reintegration of former inmates into society as productive members.
