Prince Rejects Appeal Court Ruling Affirming Oba Ghandi As Soun Of Ogbomoso
Prince Kabir Olaoye, one of the contestants for the throne of the Soun of Ogbomoso, has decided to take the matter to the Supreme Court following the Court of Appeal’s ruling last Tuesday, which upheld the selection of Oba Ghandi Olaoye as the Soun.
Prince Kabir, in 2022, had filed a suit challenging the nomination and selection process of Oba Ghandi Olaoye as Soun-elect, citing several alleged breaches in the provisions of the Soun Chieftaincy Declaration, among other issues.
Despite the ongoing suit, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, approved the nomination, and Oba Ghandi was installed as the Soun in September 2023. However, a dramatic twist occurred in October 2023 when an Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso ruled to sack Oba Olaoye from his position. In response, the Oyo State government swiftly obtained an injunction to prevent the enforcement of the court’s ruling, allowing for Oba Olaoye’s eventual coronation in December 2023.
Prince Kabir, expressing his dissatisfaction with the Appeal Court’s judgment, stated, “We are not relenting until we reclaim our mandate through the Supreme Court. We are not giving up outright. We say no to the judgment given by the Appeal Court in Ibadan. We are going to the Supreme Court.”
Prince Kabir’s next step is to seek a final resolution of the dispute in the country’s highest court.
