Court Sentences Man to Death for Murder in Akwa Ibom

An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Abak, under the presiding Judge Justice Eno Isangidihi, has sentenced Akaninyene Johnson Nkonduok to death by hanging for the murder of Imoh Amos.

The incident that led to Nkonduok’s conviction occurred in 2021 in Utu Ikot Imonte village, located in the Etim Ekpo local government area of the state.

In the case numbered HA/35C/2021, it was revealed that the town crier of the village, Imoh Amos, acting on the authority of the village leadership, had announced a compulsory sanitation exercise to be held the next day. Participation in the exercise was mandatory for all youths, with a fixed fine for anyone who failed to attend.

According to State Counsel Mrs. Nancy Idungafa, the town crier and others went to Nkonduok’s house to inquire why he had not participated in the sanitation. In response, Nkonduok allegedly drew a machete and struck Amos multiple times, inflicting fatal injuries that led to the victim’s death.

Following the attack, Nkonduok was arrested and subsequently arraigned before the high court. After a lengthy trial, during which the defense counsel, Utibe Nwoko, put up a legal battle, the court convicted Nkonduok and sentenced him to death by hanging.
