Over 280,000 Canadifans Petition to Strip Elon Musk of Citizenship
More than 280,000 Canadians have signed a petition urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke US tech mogul Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, accusing him of acting against Canada’s national interests.
The petition, launched on February 20, asserts that Musk, the head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under former President Donald Trump, has “become a member of a foreign government attempting to undermine Canadian sovereignty.” It further accuses him of engaging in actions contrary to Canada’s national interest and using his “wealth and power to influence [Canadian] elections.”
Musk, the world’s richest man, holds passports from South Africa, the U.S., and Canada, the latter of which he acquired through his Canadian-born mother.
Known for his roles as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the owner of X, Musk has recently found himself deeply involved in U.S. politics, particularly as one of Trump’s closest allies. The billionaire has stood by Trump as the former president has taken steps to disrupt U.S.-Canada relations, including threats to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, potentially dismantling the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
While Trump temporarily delayed the tariffs in early February to allow for negotiations between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, he announced plans to move forward with the measures next week. Additionally, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the U.S., including those from Canada.
Both Trump and Musk have made public statements suggesting that Canada should become the “51st state” of the U.S., with Musk controversially referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Canada’s governor.” In response to the petition, Musk dismissed Canada’s sovereignty, tweeting on X that “Canada is not a real country.”
