Anambra Monarch Drags 2 Town Union Leaders to Court Over Alleged Assault
The traditional ruler of Nimo Community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Owelle Maximus Ike Oliobi, has taken two leaders of his town union to court for allegedly assaulting him and members of his cabinet.
The accused individuals, Chukwuemeka Ezeaputa, 35, and Chigbo Aniedobe, 39, who hold the positions of youth provost and First President-General of the Nimo Town Development Union, respectively, were arraigned before Abagana Magistrate Court 3 on Thursday. Magistrate Obiora Nwajiaku presided over the case.
In the three-count charge (Case No: ANJ/21c/2025), Ezeaputa and Aniedobe, alongside “others now at large,” are accused of conspiring to assault Igwe Maximus Ike Oliobi by pushing and shoving him during a public gathering. The incident allegedly occurred on February 20, 2025, at a funeral ceremony for the wife of Chief Bobby Chinedu-Moore, SAN. The duo is also accused of threatening to harm the monarch and members of his cabinet.
The prosecution claims the offenses are punishable under sections 496(a) and 252 of the Criminal Code Cap. 36 Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all three charges. Magistrate Nwajiaku declined the prosecution’s request to remand the accused and instead granted them bail in the sum of N300,000 each. Each defendant must provide two sureties who must be residents within the jurisdiction.
The case has been adjourned to April 2, 2025, for further proceedings.
