Kano Government to Sponsor 1,002 Students for Overseas Education

The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to expanding educational opportunities for its youth by sponsoring 1,002 students for overseas studies, building on the success of last year’s sponsorship of 1,001 students.

This announcement was made by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, during a courtesy visit from the European Union (EU) Delegation in anticipation of the 2025 Study in Europe Fair, which will take place in Kano.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, Deputy Governor Gwarzo referred to the initiative as a “bridge for creating a future where the youth of Kano can access world-class education and actively participate in the global knowledge economy.”

He further emphasized that education is a top priority for the Kano State Government, reflected in the highest budget allocation to the education sector in Nigeria for the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years. The government has also declared a State of Emergency in Education to ensure that young people receive high-quality education, equipping them with the necessary skills to thrive in the modern world.

While expressing gratitude to the EU for its ongoing support and collaboration, Deputy Governor Gwarzo recognized the Study in Europe Fair as a testament to the commitment of international partners in strengthening Nigeria’s educational system.

“As a state that has long been a center of trade, culture, and education, Kano stands to benefit greatly from international collaborations like this. We look forward to a successful event that will empower our youth, foster educational exchanges, and contribute to the overall economic and social development of Kano, Nigeria, and West Africa,” Gwarzo stated.

Earlier, Gautier Mignot, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, and leader of the EU delegation, shared that their visit to Kano was focused on the upcoming Study in Europe Fair, set for February 27, 2025.

Accompanied by several representatives from EU member states, Mignot explained that the event had been held in Kano before, bringing European higher education institutions together with academic scholars and students to provide information on study programs and opportunities in Europe.

Mignot highlighted the goal of the event to establish new contacts, partnerships, and student exchanges, with Nigerian scholars heading to Europe and European scholars coming to Kano. He mentioned that around 20 university representatives were in Kano for the event, with many visiting for the first time, and emphasized that the initiative was designed to promote people-to-people connections and strengthen educational collaboration between Europe and Kano.

The delegation also included Amb. Michal Cygan of the Polish Embassy to Nigeria, Jurgew Bartelink, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Nigeria, Leila Ben Mathieu, Head of Human Development at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, and Kristof Korosi, Deputy Ambassador of Hungary to Nigeria.
