Threat to Life: Afenifere Urges Tinubu to Ensure Security for NAFDAC Boss and Others

Afenifere, the leading Yoruba socio-political group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to bolster security for the Director-General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and other public officials.

Prof. Adeyeye recently raised an alarm about life-threatening dangers she and her NAFDAC staff face while carrying out their duties. In a distress message on Wednesday, she disclosed that threats against her life were escalating, recounting a previous incident where a staff member’s child was kidnapped in Kano due to the parent’s professional responsibilities. Fortunately, the child escaped unharmed.

Responding to the alarming development, Afenifere, in a statement issued on Thursday in Akure by its Organizing Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, emphasized that the concerns raised by the NAFDAC DG should not be taken lightly. The group insisted that any threat to her life represents an attack on public health, national security, and the integrity of society itself.

Afenifere underscored Prof. Adeyeye’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s fight against counterfeit drugs, hazardous consumables, and the criminal syndicates that profit from them. The group stressed that such public servants are on the frontlines of critical national interests and must be safeguarded.

“Public figures like Prof. Adeyeye, the Chairman of the EFCC, and the head of the NDLEA must be provided with comprehensive security measures, including armoured vehicles, elite personnel, and advanced surveillance systems. Their families must also be shielded from harm both during their tenure and beyond,” Afenifere stated.

The group warned that failure to provide adequate protection would lead to unchecked impunity and erosion of the nation’s institutions. “If criminals perceive a lack of will by the state to protect its key functionaries, it will lead to a collapse of law and order,” they added.

Afenifere further declared its firm stance: “Any threat to Prof. Adeyeye’s life will not be tolerated. Nigeria cannot afford to ignore the dangers posed by those flooding our country with deadly drugs. This is a battle for national survival, and the stakes could not be higher.”

The group called on President Tinubu to act swiftly and decisively, ensuring an immediate upgrade in security around Prof. Adeyeye, her family, and her NAFDAC team. They emphasized that her return to Nigeria to serve in this capacity was a noble sacrifice that must be protected and supported by all patriotic Nigerians.
