Youths Defy Warnings, Scoop Fuel From Fallen Tanker in Edo

Several youths narrowly escaped danger on Thursday after rushing to scoop fuel from an overturned tanker in Irua, Esan West local government area of Edo State.

A viral video captured the moment concerned citizens, observing the scene on the busy Benin-Abuja highway, tried to dissuade the youths from approaching the tanker due to the potential risks involved. The accident occurred in an area surrounded by dense vegetation, raising fears of a possible fire disaster.

Despite the warnings, some individuals continued to collect the spilled fuel, ignoring the safety advice. Disturbingly, there were no security personnel present at the scene to intervene and prevent the crowd from engaging in the dangerous act.

Efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, Emma Yamu, for comment were unsuccessful.

Tanker accidents have become more frequent across Nigeria, leading to calls from stakeholders for greater public education on the dangers of mishandling flammable materials.
