RSIEC Fixes August 9 For Fresh LG Elections In Rivers

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date for the Local Government Area (LGA) elections in the state. The elections will now take place on August 9, 2025, following the Supreme Court’s recent judgment that invalidated the previous elections held in 2024 due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retired), disclosed the new election date on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. The meeting also served as the platform for unveiling the election timetable and guidelines.

Justice Enebeli emphasized that the RSIEC is committed to ensuring a free, fair, credible, and impartial election. He called on political parties to abide by the electoral guidelines and rules to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The Supreme Court had on February 28, 2025, annulled the October 5, 2024 local government elections, ruling that RSIEC failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The previous elections were notable for the opposition Action Peoples Party (APP) winning 22 out of 23 local government chairmanship seats, after the two major political parties in the state — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) — opted not to participate.

The new date, set for August 9, 2025, will see fresh elections in all local government areas across Rivers State.
