Edo Gov’t Demolishes Houses Used As Kidnappers’ Hideouts
In a significant move to tackle the rising menace of kidnapping and bolster public safety, the Edo State Government has demolished properties linked to criminal activities across two local government areas in the state.
The operation, led by Mr. Akhere Paul, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, took place in Illeh, located in Esan West Local Government Area, and Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area. The demolition exercise is part of the state’s robust anti-kidnapping initiative.
Akhere Paul emphasized that the action was in line with the state’s new anti-kidnapping law, which targets properties used as hideouts by criminals. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach for any property being used for criminal purposes, especially those linked to kidnapping.
“This house was used to keep kidnap victims, and dangerous weapons were recovered here. The new law, signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, mandates the demolition of any property used for such criminal activities,” Paul stated.
The Special Task Force Commander, SP Michael Anetor, also affirmed that the crackdown would continue, urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
Additionally, two suspects, Utubor Uchenna and Felix Ebama, were arrested in connection with the demolished properties. Both individuals admitted to using the buildings as hideouts and confessed to being involved in high-profile kidnappings, including one where they collected a ₦10 million ransom.
The Edo State Government has vowed to continue its efforts in eradicating criminal activities, particularly kidnapping, in order to restore safety and security to the state.
