Federal Government Assumes Control of Gombe Hospital

The Federal Government has officially converted the Gombe State-owned General Hospital in Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre. This new facility, known as the Kumo Federal Medical Centre, becomes the second federal health institution in the state, following the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, the state capital.

The Federal Teaching Hospital was originally a medical centre before being upgraded to its current status.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, it was announced that the Kumo Federal Medical Centre will function as a tertiary health facility, playing a crucial role in training medical personnel and enhancing healthcare services not only in Gombe State but also throughout the North-East.

Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya formally requested the federal takeover of the hospital, which was subsequently approved by President Bola Tinubu. The decision was influenced by the region’s alarming maternal and neonatal mortality rates, as well as other concerning health indicators in Gombe.

The Federal Government’s approval also took into account the state government’s commitment to improving its healthcare sector, which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the comprehensive reforms being implemented in the health sector.

President Tinubu praised Governor Yahaya for prioritizing the well-being of Gombe’s citizens and expressed confidence that the takeover would significantly enhance the state’s healthcare delivery system.
