Federal Government Assumes Control of TASUED in Ogun, Now a Federal University

The Federal Government has officially taken over Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, converting it into a federal institution.

TASUED, founded in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, is Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. The institution is named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a prominent human rights activist and educator who also founded Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State.

As a federal university, TASUED becomes the first federally owned higher education institution in Ogun East senatorial district. The university already boasts significant infrastructure and a solid academic framework, meaning that the transition will require minimal federal investment.

A statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga revealed that President Tinubu approved the university’s new status on Friday. He also expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for facilitating the handover, calling it a valuable educational asset for the state.

“It’s an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education program in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our youth and instilling leadership and patriotic values at Mayflower School,” President Tinubu remarked.

He further highlighted the contributions of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a pivotal role in preventing the closure of the university in 2012, just seven years after its founding.

Both Chief Awolowo and Dr. Solarin were esteemed figures from Ogun State’s Eastern Senatorial District, which includes the Ijebu and Remo regions.

The President emphasized that the elevation of TASUED to a Federal University of Education aligns with the government’s broader objective of strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of instruction at all educational levels.

TASUED’s new designation adds it to the list of federally-run universities dedicated to education, alongside Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, Imo State, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo State.
