Customs Seizes 445 Bags of Smuggled Rice from Benin Republic in Ogun
The Federal Operations Unit Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday announced the interception of 445 bags of rice smuggled from Benin Republic at Ijoun town in Ogun State.
In a media briefing, the Customs Area Controller for the Unit, Controller Kola Oladeji, explained that the seizure occurred after the vehicle transporting the rice broke down, allowing Customs officers to detect and seize the contraband.
Oladeji stated that although the smugglers had chosen a difficult terrain to transport the rice, Customs officers were able to successfully evacuate all the smuggled items. He emphasized that the seizure was the result of actionable intelligence that alerted the service to the smuggling attempt.
“This seizure today was based on intelligence that we received about some individuals planning to smuggle prohibited items from Benin Republic into the country,” Oladeji said. “Thanks to our timely action, we were able to apprehend the rice, despite the tough terrain.”
He further confirmed that there were no casualties on either side—neither from the smugglers nor from the Customs officers involved in the operation.
“We follow strict rules of engagement, especially when dealing with border communities,” he continued. “We respect the lives of our people and ensure that we don’t harm anyone. Our goal is to prevent illegal activities, not to create harm. While some smugglers managed to escape, we were able to secure a significant portion of the contraband and will continue to pursue the others.”
Oladeji also expressed his appreciation for the logistical support provided by the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, which enabled the successful operation.
“We are grateful for the logistics support we receive, which is vital for our success,” Oladeji said. “Without the right mobility and healthcare support, our operations wouldn’t be as effective. We are determined to keep fighting smuggling, especially during Ramadan, where we remain committed to our duties despite the fasting season.”
He concluded by stating that a comprehensive press briefing showcasing the Customs Service’s activities and weekly reports would be held soon, under their Operation Swift String initiative.
