Reps Order NCC To Block Pornographic Sites In Nigeria
The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites in Nigeria, following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State.
The motion mandates the NCC to ensure that all internet service providers (ISPs) in Nigeria block access to pornographic content with immediate effect. Tafoki, in presenting the motion, highlighted the growing concern over cyber pornography and pointed out that Nigeria, being a highly religious country, has not done enough to address the issue.
Tafoki emphasized that major religious faiths in Nigeria preach against obscenity and nudity, and he referenced efforts by other countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws banning pornography. He also cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the negative effects of pornography, which include contributing to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” Tafoki stated.
Following the presentation, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, called for a voice vote, which resulted in overwhelming support for the motion.
In addition to the directive to block the websites, the House also instructed the NCC to impose penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with the new regulation.
