Taraba Government Finally Speaks Out on Deputy Governor’s Health
After months of speculation, the Taraba State government has revealed that Deputy Governor Aminu Alkali has been receiving medical treatment following a stroke but is expected to return to work soon.
Alkali’s extended absence since November 2024 had raised concerns across the state and beyond. However, in a statement following the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Monday, Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Zainab Usman, confirmed that the deputy governor had been undergoing treatment in Abuja before being transferred to Cairo, Egypt, for further medical care.
“Towards the end of November last year, His Excellency fell ill, which led to his initial treatment in Abuja,” Usman shared. “Later, he was moved to Cairo for more specialized care, and the Commissioner for Health was tasked with monitoring his recovery.”
Usman urged Taraba residents to show understanding and empathy towards the deputy governor and the state government during this time, emphasizing that illness is a part of life.
“Illness can happen to anyone, and we should consider the human aspect before questioning the health or fitness of any public official,” she said. “Before approaching the courts to question someone’s health status, we should acknowledge that they are first and foremost human.”
Addressing concerns about Alkali’s continued eligibility for office, Usman clarified that his position remains at the discretion of Governor Agbu Kefas.
“As a lawyer, I can confirm that the 90-day rule applies only to sitting governors, not deputy governors. His continued service is ultimately a matter for the governor to decide,” she explained.
In a similar vein, Commissioner for Health Bordiya Buma, who recently visited the deputy governor in Egypt, provided an update on Alkali’s health.
“He suffered a stroke, which impacted one side of his body and affected his speech,” Buma explained. “Thankfully, he’s responding well to treatment, and we’re optimistic about his full recovery. We look forward to welcoming him back to the state soon.”
Although no specific date for Alkali’s return was given, the state government assured the public that his recovery is progressing well, and he is expected to resume his duties as soon as he is deemed medically fit.
