APC Takes Lead in Edo Assembly as 4 PDP Lawmakers Join Party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has gained the majority in the Edo State House of Assembly following the defection of four lawmakers from the opposition parties. Three members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one from the Labour Party (LP) joined the ruling APC on Wednesday.

With these defections, the APC now holds 13 seats in the Assembly, while the PDP retains 11. The lawmakers who made the switch to the APC include Hon. Donald Okugbe (Akoko Edo Constituency II), Hon. Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon South Constituency II), Hon. Richard Edosa (Oredo West Constituency), and Hon. Sunday Ojezele (Esan South East).

The defected lawmakers were warmly received by the state’s APC working committee, led by the Acting State Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, at the party’s Secretariat in Benin.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Edosa described the move as a defining moment, acknowledging the division within their former parties that created the platform for their defection. He emphasized their belief in the vision of Governor Monday Okpebholo and their commitment to working with him to build both the party and the state.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand. We believe in the vision of Governor Monday Okpebholo and decided to join him to achieve his vision for Edo State. We promise to work with the governor to build the party and the state,” Edosa said.

In his remarks, Acting Chairman Tenebe praised the defection as a significant moment for the APC. He assured the new members of equal rights and privileges within the party, emphasizing that their decision to join was not just about increasing numbers but about strengthening the party’s resolve to improve Edo State.

“These honourable members, who bring with them a wealth of experience and diverse perspectives, have recognized that the APC offers the most promising path forward for Edo State and our nation, Nigeria. They have seen the clarity of the policies, the integrity of the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, and the unwavering dedication to make the lives of Edo people better,” Tenebe said.

He also acknowledged the courage and conviction of the defected lawmakers, assuring them that their contributions would be vital in building a stronger economy, improving education, promoting social harmony, and securing the lives of the people of Edo.
