Bill to Establish Federal University of Geomatics in Oyo Advances to 2nd Reading in Senate
The bill aimed at establishing the Federal University of Geomatics in Oyo Town, Oyo State, successfully passed its second reading in the Senate on Wednesday.
Sponsored by Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central, the bill seeks to elevate the Federal School of Surveying in Oyo to become Nigeria’s first university focused on Geomatics.
This bill was first introduced to the Senate on July 3, 2024.
A delighted Senator Akintunde shared the news of the bill’s progress with his constituents on Facebook, expressing his excitement about the advancement of the initiative. He wrote, “I am thrilled to inform you all that we are one step closer to realizing the goal of this bill.”
He highlighted the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, as Nigeria’s oldest technical training institution, established 106 years ago. “Given the rapid advancements in technology across all sectors globally, it is crucial for Nigeria to upgrade such a specialized institution to meet the highest standards,” Akintunde emphasized.
The bill has now passed its second reading and has been forwarded to the Senate Standing Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further consideration. Senator Akintunde assured his constituents that all efforts would be made to ensure the successful upgrade of the institution.
