Four Soldiers Killed as ISWAP Attacks Military Base in Borno

At least four soldiers were reported dead and several others injured when terrorists from the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) launched an attack on a military base in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday.

Sources told LEADERSHIP that the terrorists, who arrived on motorcycles, stormed the remote village of Warja, located between Sabon Gari and Damboa, in the evening. The attackers killed the soldiers and set military equipment ablaze.

A security official stated that the terrorists overran the base, destroying the armoury and burning operational vehicles. “It was a devastating attack. We lost brave soldiers. Unfortunately, the attackers set the entire base on fire, looting and taking our ammunition with them,” the source said.

A Civilian JTF member, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the terrorists arrived in large numbers and overwhelmed the personnel stationed at the base. The destroyed vehicles included two armored tanks, Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), two utility vehicles, and large quantities of ammunition.

In a separate incident, three Nigerian Police officers were injured when a landmine exploded along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road in Borno State. The explosives, believed to have been planted by ISWAP terrorists, detonated as the officers passed the area.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who reported the incident on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, revealed that the explosion occurred around 3 p.m. near Garin Kuturu village, between Auno and Jakana, while a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) patrol team was on routine duty. The blast damaged their patrol vehicle, creating a crater three feet deep and five feet wide.

Makama also noted that a Bomb Disposal (EOD-CBRN) team was deployed to secure the area and check for additional explosives. No secondary devices were found, and the area was cleared for safe passage.
