Oyo Gov’t Stands Firm on Demolition of Shanties Around Schools

The Oyo State Government has reiterated its firm stance on demolishing illegal structures around schools across the state, stressing that there will be no reversal of this decision.

Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), made this declaration during an inspection in the Jemibewon, Sabo area of Ibadan, the state capital.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a clean, lawful, and orderly environment, emphasizing that it would not be swayed by any opposition or complaints related to the demolition efforts.

Speaking after the inspection, Justice Aderemi stated that the visit was prompted by a petition received by OYRLEA on February 17, 2025, which highlighted the presence of shanties around St. Gabriel School in Jemibewon.

She recalled that Governor Seyi Makinde had issued an order on October 24, 2023, directing the removal of shanties and encroachments around school premises and fences. Justice Aderemi emphasized that the directive must be enforced according to the law.

“Letters have been sent twice to the occupants and owners of these illegal structures. Our officers even met with the ‘Seriki n Sabo’ to discuss the issue with the residents, and an ultimatum was given for them to vacate the area,” she said.

However, the Chairperson noted that an appeal had been made to delay the demolition and intervention until Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
