Many Injured as Violence Breaks Out in Plateau Community
Violence erupted in the Shimankar community of Shendam Local Government Area in Plateau State, leaving many people injured and several homes and business establishments destroyed. The unrest followed a disagreement between traditional worshippers and Muslim youth.
According to an investigation by LEADERSHIP, the violence began late Sunday night and continued into Monday morning. A reliable source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the conflict started when traditional worshippers were passing through the area and a confrontation occurred with some Muslim youth. The altercation escalated, resulting in the burning of homes and businesses.
As the violence spread, many residents, including women and children, fled the area, while shop owners hurriedly closed their stores to protect their property.
Attempts to reach the Chief of Shimankar, Long Menkaat Manu, for a comment on the incident were unsuccessful as his phone remained switched off. Additionally, the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, had yet to respond to inquiries about the situation at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, Major Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), when contacted, assured that he would reach out to the relevant authorities to gather more information and update our correspondent.
