NSCIA Warns Against False Claims Targeting Sultan
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning against attributing false statements to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
The apex Islamic body condemned a fabricated claim that linked the Sultan to the Islamization of Nigeria, calling the assertion “mischievous” and “malicious.” The NSCIA emphasized the importance of combating the spread of dangerous misinformation.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Council’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Imam Haroun Muhammad Eze, the NSCIA clarified that the Sultan, who has been abroad for the past two weeks, did not make the purported statement associating him with the controversial narrative of Islamizing Nigeria.
The Council further stressed that such a baseless claim not only tarnishes the Sultan’s reputation but also threatens the unity of the Muslim community he represents, which consists of diverse ethnic groups across the country.
While the NSCIA noted that misinformation typically does not warrant a response, the Council believed it was necessary to address the falsehoods to prevent potential unrest among those susceptible to misleading information.
“It is unimaginable that such an eminent leader could have uttered such abominable statements,” the statement read, reaffirming the credibility of both the Sultan and the NSCIA.
Imam Eze urged Nigerians to always verify information before sharing it, underscoring the importance of discernment in today’s digital age.
“May Almighty Allah grant us peace and unity in Nigeria,” the statement concluded, as the Council called for unity in standing against misinformation that could fuel division.
