Ex-IGP Okiro Calls for Caution and Human Rights Respect Amid Rivers State State of Emergency

Former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has called on all parties involved in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State to exercise caution, uphold human rights, and seek peaceful dialogue in light of the recently declared state of emergency in the state.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Okiro expressed deep concern over the political unrest that has plagued Rivers State for nearly two years and urged all factions to prioritize peace and stability by laying down their arms.

“It is essential that we focus on unity, dialogue, and respect for human rights to resolve this crisis,” Okiro said. “The people of Rivers State deserve peace, and this can only be achieved through constructive dialogue, not conflict.”

Drawing on his experience from the 2009 Niger Delta amnesty programme, which helped to end years of militancy in the region, Okiro emphasized the need for collective efforts to restore normalcy in Rivers State.

“Just over two weeks ago, I was in the process of forming a committee of elders and stakeholders in Rivers State to address this political stalemate,” he shared.

The former police chief reiterated his commitment to working alongside other stakeholders to chart a peaceful and sustainable resolution for the state.

Okiro also urged political leaders to comply with President Bola Tinubu’s directives and focus on finding solutions that prioritize the well-being of Rivers residents.

“This is not the time for political grandstanding but for collective responsibility. The safety and progress of Rivers State must be our main concern,” he added.

LEADERSHIP recalls that on Tuesday, March 18, 2023, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State following escalating political and security crises that had hindered governance and destabilized democratic structures.
