Police Inspector and 11 Bandits Killed in Fierce Gunfight in Benue
A commander with the Benue State Joint Security Taskforce, known as ‘Operation Zenda,’ was killed during a violent clash with armed bandits in the Sankera region of the state, which includes the local government areas of Katsina/Ala, Ukum, and Logo.
The deadly confrontation, which lasted for over 12 hours, took place when security forces confronted the bandits. The officer, an Inspector of Police who led the operation in the area, lost his life during the exchange of fire.
A source, who requested anonymity, revealed to LEADERSHIP that on Tuesday, the Zenda operatives launched a raid on a militia hideout. As soon as the bandits noticed the police presence, they opened fire, fatally shooting the unit commander. In return, the police officers managed to kill 11 members of the criminal group.
The source added that the police had acted swiftly after receiving a distress call from local residents, who reported an ongoing attack by armed bandits in nearby communities. Upon mobilizing, the security team arrived at the bandits’ hideout, where gunfire erupted as soon as they were spotted by the criminals.
“The police forces swiftly overwhelmed the bandits in a gun battle that raged from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of 11 bandits. The remaining members of the group fled into the nearby bushes,” the source explained.
When reached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue State, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident but noted that she had not yet received full details. She assured that she would provide more information as soon as it became available.
