JUST-IN: Tinubu Hails NASS for Approving Emergency Rule in Rivers

Says Action Will Restore Stability, Protect Economy

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, praised the National Assembly for its decisive and patriotic approval of the State of Emergency proclamation in Rivers State, a crucial move aimed at restoring stability following a prolonged political crisis that had paralyzed governance and threatened national economic security for over 15 months.

The President specifically commended the leadership of the National Assembly—Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other principal officers and members—for placing the security and welfare of the people of Rivers State above partisan concerns.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged the lawmakers’ careful review of classified security briefings, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

“The crisis in Rivers State had reached a perilous tipping point, endangering the security of vital oil and gas installations and threatening to undermine the national economy and the progress we have made since the start of our administration in May 2023,” President Tinubu stated.

“As I mentioned in my address to the nation on March 18, the near-collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left us with no choice but to act. This emergency measure is vital to protect livelihoods, safeguard critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.”

The President affirmed that the six-month emergency rule would empower the newly-appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize Rivers State, address systemic breakdowns, and facilitate dialogue among conflicting parties.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the National Assembly to foster peace, economic resilience, and equitable development across Nigeria.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when leaders are guided by unity of purpose and patriotism. We remain determined to build a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is protected and nurtured,” he remarked.

President Tinubu concluded by thanking all Nigerians for their understanding and urged all stakeholders to support the restoration of peace in Rivers State.
