PCNG-i Inspects Abuja Explosion Site, Urges Greater Safety Awareness
Michael Oluwagbemi, Chief Executive and Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNG-i), has visited the site of the tragic explosion at Karu Bridge in Abuja, accompanied by officials from the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), who were also conducting their investigations.
During the visit, Oluwagbemi expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, while stressing the urgent need for increased safety awareness and strict adherence to safety protocols at accident sites. He emphasized the importance of enhanced monitoring of articulated trucks to ensure brake safety, proper maintenance, and compliance with regulations. Additionally, he advocated for a more robust licensing system for commercial drivers, highlighting the necessity for both safety and evacuation training.
Following its preliminary investigation and urging patience for a comprehensive inquiry into the accident’s cause, PCNG-i reiterated the inherent safety of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. The organization called for a more closely monitored gas vehicle ecosystem, underscoring the upcoming launch of the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS) as a step towards achieving this goal.
