UniAbuja Acting VC Promises Transparency in Selection of New Vice-Chancellor
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Professor Patricia Manko Lar, has committed to ensuring a transparent and inclusive process in selecting the institution’s next substantive Vice-Chancellor.
This announcement comes after a period of instability in the university’s leadership, which saw the dismissal of the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi. Maikudi’s removal was part of a wider succession crisis that prompted government intervention.
In her first address to the University Senate, shared on the university’s official Facebook page, Professor Lar outlined her vision for the restoration of academic excellence at UniAbuja. She emphasized the importance of unity and transparency in rebuilding the institution, acknowledging that the university must confront its challenges head-on.
“We have not exhibited the highest or loftiest sense of decorum, tolerance, respect for each other, and self-restraint in the face of provocation. These are characteristics of a community of noble scholars,” Professor Lar stated.
She urged all stakeholders to focus on the advancement of academic excellence, highlighting the university’s potential and the presence of internationally renowned scholars. “With the great potential and scholars of international repute in this institution, and our strategic location in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, we must work together to build a great citadel of knowledge,” she added.
Reflecting on her arrival at the university on February 11, 2025, Professor Lar expressed appreciation for the warm reception she received from both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as key university officials and stakeholders. Despite the turbulence caused by the leadership crisis, she noted that the university is recovering quickly.
Professor Lar reaffirmed her commitment to overseeing the selection of the university’s eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor during her six-month tenure. She stressed the importance of fostering an atmosphere of peace and inclusivity to ensure a smooth transition.
“The process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor will commence soon, once a full council is constituted, and representatives from the Senate and Congregation will be elected accordingly,” she said, underscoring the necessity for a transparent process free from division and distrust.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor further emphasized the importance of electing strong, selfless, and capable representatives who embody the values of fairness and accountability.
