CJ Frees 95 Prison Inmates in Katsina
The Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Danladi, on Thursday released 95 inmates during a jail delivery exercise at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Katsina.
As part of a broader effort to decongest correctional facilities, 91 inmates were granted bail, while four others were discharged entirely.
Justice Danladi explained that the purpose of the exercise was to alleviate overcrowding in correctional centers across the state. He revealed that the inmates had been recommended for release by the Sub-Committee on Decongestion of Correctional Centres, citing various valid reasons, including advanced age, prolonged detention, and serious health conditions.
Moving forward, Justice Danladi announced that the details and photographs of the released inmates would be documented for future reference and tracking purposes.
He urged the freed individuals to remain law-abiding and cautioned that repeat offenders may not be afforded similar opportunities in the future.
The Controller of Corrections in Katsina, Umar Baba, expressed his gratitude to the Chief Judge for the exercise, noting that it not only helped reduce congestion in the facilities but also contributed to managing the inmate population, easing tension, and improving the rehabilitation process in correctional centers.
Baba also encouraged judges and magistrates to consider non-custodial sentences, stressing that such measures would support the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society as responsible citizens.
