Nat. Sec: Supreme Court Ruling Empowers PDP to Dismiss Anyanwu – Ugochinyere
A landmark ruling by the Supreme Court on Friday, which reinforced that party leadership matters are an internal affair of political parties, has granted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the authority to officially remove Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
This was revealed by the Spokesperson of the Opposition Coalition, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, who hailed the ruling as a “powerful tool” that solidifies the party’s ability to dismiss Anyanwu without the risk of judicial reversal.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ugochinyere explained that the ruling confirmed that matters regarding internal party affairs are non-justiciable, making any further legal action by Anyanwu futile and without merit.
“The Supreme Court ruling on the matter of the PDP Secretary is a robust tool that will empower the party to remove Anyanwu once again, suspend [FCT Minister Nyesom] Wike, and begin the process of rebuilding the party,” Ugochinyere said.
He further explained that the judgement provides the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) the authority to enforce disciplinary measures, including implementing the recommendations of the Chief Tom Ikimi Report, which had previously resulted in Anyanwu’s suspension. Ugochinyere emphasized that with a majority of the 18-member NWC supporting Anyanwu’s removal, any new suspension will be final and irreversible, even in the event of a court challenge.
“With this ruling, once the NWC convenes, or if it doesn’t, they can summon a meeting with a two-thirds majority and immediately use their powers to act on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Convention in emergency situations like this,” he said.
Ugochinyere reassured PDP members, urging them not to be disturbed by the ruling, as it does not mean Anyanwu is automatically reinstated. He described the judgment as a strategic opportunity for the party’s leadership to “end the chaos” and restore order within the opposition.
In addition to Anyanwu, Ugochinyere called for action against the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of “years of sabotage” within the party. He urged PDP leaders to stay firm and not be swayed by external pressures.
“I commend the NWC members who have stood firm against attempts to bribe or compromise them with land deals in Abuja. They must remain resolute and immediately use their majority to suspend or expel Anyanwu and his ally, Wike, to end the chaos that has weakened the once-vibrant PDP and its role as an effective opposition,” he declared.
