Rivers: Cross River Acting Gov Disowns S/South Govs’ Forum, Backs Tinubu on Emergency Rule
The Acting Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, has publicly distanced himself from the position taken by the South-South Governors’ Forum regarding the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu. The state of emergency led to the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state’s House of Assembly.
In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Fred Abua Esq., the Acting Governor emphasized that he was neither consulted nor his opinion sought before the statement was made by the Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum. Odey further clarified that the position taken by the forum does not represent the stance of the Cross River State government.
“The position of the forum does not reflect the views of the Government of Cross River State, which fully aligns with the decision of Mr. President, taken in the best interest of national security, peace, and stability,” the statement read.
Odey added that every responsible government must prioritize the protection of lives and property, and in situations where decisive actions are necessary, such measures should be supported to ensure democracy and national unity.
The Acting Governor reiterated that Cross River State remains committed to upholding constitutional governance and will continue to collaborate with President Tinubu’s administration to maintain peace and security across the nation.
