Pope Francis to Be Discharged from Hospital on Sunday
Pope Francis is set to be discharged from the hospital on Sunday after spending more than a month receiving treatment for double pneumonia. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of the medical team treating the Catholic Pontiff, confirmed that the Pope’s condition is stable, and he will continue his recovery at home with prescribed medication and a recommended period of convalescence lasting at least two months.
“The Holy Father will be discharged tomorrow in stable clinical condition, with a prescription to partially continue drug therapy and a convalescence period of at least two months,” Dr. Alfieri announced during a news conference at Gemelli Hospital on Saturday. “Today we are happy to say that tomorrow he will be at home.”
Pope Francis has been hospitalized since February 14, marking his longest stay at Gemelli Hospital since his election as Pope 12 years ago. Although he has not been seen in public for weeks, the Vatican has kept the faithful informed by releasing a short audio message from the Pope and a photo of him praying at the hospital chapel last weekend.
In recent updates, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis’ pneumonia is under control, and his overall condition is improving. Additionally, the Pope’s approval of a new three-year reform process for the Catholic Church, including proposals for greater roles for women, such as ordaining them as deacons, further signals his intent to remain in his post despite his extended time in the hospital.
These reforms aim to enhance inclusion and governance within the Catholic Church, with an emphasis on broadening participation from non-clergy members.
