TRCN Vows to Transform Teaching Profession in Nigeria

The newly appointed chairman of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and vice chairman (North East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Mustapha Salihu, has expressed his commitment to fulfilling the Council’s mandate of regulating and professionalizing the teaching profession in Nigeria.

Salihu made this pledge during his assumption of office as the board chairman of TRCN in Abuja, a ceremony attended by key education stakeholders and prominent APC figures, including House of Representatives member Aliyu Wakili Boya (Fofure/Song Federal Constituency, Adamawa State), Mallam Tasiu Mohammed, Director of Election Management, APC North-East Director of Protocol Bello Baballo, and Barr. Wale Afolabi (SAN).

In his address, Salihu outlined his vision for the TRCN, emphasizing the need for a structured and well-monitored system that aligns with international best practices in teacher education, certification, and professional development. He committed to focusing on improving the quality of teachers, enforcing discipline, fostering professionalism, and ensuring that educators receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.

Salihu also promised to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that every teacher in Nigeria is registered with TRCN through a dedicated portal. He stressed the importance of involving proprietors of private schools in the regulatory process to ensure nationwide compliance.

Furthermore, Salihu stated that under his leadership, TRCN would work to elevate the teaching profession to global standards by strengthening teacher training programs, implementing policies that promote excellence, and ensuring that only qualified individuals are allowed to practice as teachers in Nigeria.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Stella-Maria Nwokeocha, the Acting Registrar/Chief Executive of TRCN, expressed confidence in Salihu’s leadership. She assured him of the full cooperation and support of the council’s staff and reiterated TRCN’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the teaching profession, collaborating with stakeholders to drive reforms in Nigeria’s education sector.
