Aiyedatiwa Launches Male-Child Sensitization Programme in Ondo
Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, launched a male-child sensitization programme on Monday aimed at promoting gender equality and challenging traditional patriarchal norms within the state.
Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted that the initiative focuses on instilling positive values, enhancing emotional intelligence, fostering attitudinal changes, and equipping boys with essential life skills to help them navigate societal pressures. The programme is designed to create a well-rounded male population capable of making informed decisions and contributing positively to society.
The programme was officially launched at three schools in Ondo Town, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area. The schools include Ondo Boys High School, Ondo Anglican Grammar School, and St. Joseph’s College.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Dr. Seun Osamaye, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed his government’s commitment to empowering all children, regardless of gender, ensuring they reach their full potential. “The initiative targets 1,000 students from each of the 18 local government areas in the state, aiming for a minimum of 18,000 students,” he stated.
The Governor emphasized that the programme would address the unique needs of the boy-child, focusing on emotional intelligence, behavior change, and resilience in facing societal challenges. “The event was warmly received by students, teachers, and principals who expressed excitement and appreciation for this impactful initiative,” he added.
At the event, Mrs. Bolanle Afolabi, Executive Director of the Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence (OSAA-GBV), addressed the topic of anger management. She explained that while anger is a natural emotion, failing to manage it effectively has led many young men into trouble. Afolabi urged the students to develop healthy coping mechanisms and seek help if necessary.
At St. Joseph’s College, Professor Bridget Awosika, a University Don, engaged the students in a discussion on resisting negative peer pressure, offering practical strategies for making informed and independent decisions.
Mr. Oladeji Olorunsola, Director of Research and Documentation at the state Ministry of Women Affairs, highlighted the importance of attitudinal changes, stressing the impact of good behavior and character.
Lastly, Patience Aarinola Adamolekun, a Nurse and member of the Hospital Management Board, spoke on emotional intelligence, teaching students how to develop this essential skill using the RULER framework: Recognize emotions, Understand their causes, Label them accurately, Express emotions appropriately, and Regulate them effectively.
The initiative is seen as a significant step toward fostering gender equality and equipping young males in Ondo State with the tools they need to thrive.
