INEC Pays Tribute to Late Ex-Chair of Electoral Body Prof. Humphrey Nwosu
On Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held an Afternoon of Tribute in honour of former National Electoral Commission (NEC) chairman, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu. This tribute took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, with INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, leading the ceremony. The event was attended by National Commissioners, former Senior INEC staff, members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and the family of Prof. Nwosu, including his wife and children.
Prof. Nwosu, who was the chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993, passed away in October 2024. His tenure played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral processes, leaving a lasting legacy on the country’s democracy.
In a heartfelt moment, Emeka, one of Prof. Nwosu’s sons, thanked those present for their tributes and support. He encouraged all attendees to continue working toward Nigeria’s democratic success and to honor his father’s legacy by striving for the country’s progress.
Earlier, Prof. Yakubu paid tribute to Prof. Nwosu, reflecting on the role of the National Electoral Commission in the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election. Despite the election’s annulment and the challenges faced during his tenure, Yakubu emphasized the long-term appreciation of Nwosu’s efforts in organizing what is now celebrated as one of Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections.
Prof. Yakubu also expressed regret that Prof. Nwosu was not fully acknowledged for his work during his lifetime, particularly after the recognition of the presumed winner of the 1993 election, Chief M. K. O. Abiola. He emphasized that, even though the election was ultimately recognized as pivotal to Nigeria’s democracy, the electoral body led by Prof. Nwosu did not receive the full recognition it deserved.
“I pray that the appropriate authorities can still honor him posthumously,” Prof. Yakubu stated.
The tribute concluded with words of strength and gratitude extended to the Nwosu family for their continued support during difficult times. The ceremony was a heartfelt reflection of Prof. Nwosu’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
