Breach Of Promise To Marry A Partner Attracts Penalties, Says Abuja Lawyer Adeyanju

Failure to fulfill a promise to marry someone in Nigeria can lead to a legal claim, and the person who defaults on this promise may face penalties, according to Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, Esq.

In a statement posted on his social media on Tuesday, Barrister Adeyanju explained that breaking a promise to marry is treated like a breach of contract under Nigerian law. The wronged party is entitled to seek damages for emotional distress, financial losses, and other forms of harm caused by the breach.

Adeyanju said, “Breach of promise to marry is a legitimate legal claim in Nigeria. It is treated as a breach of contract, allowing the wronged party to seek damages for emotional distress, financial losses & other injuries.”

He encouraged anyone who has been jilted by a partner who broke a marriage promise to consult a lawyer for legal assistance. He noted that such situations can lead to severe consequences, including depression, bodily harm, social dislocation, and even suicide in extreme cases.

This statement underscores the potential legal repercussions of breaking a marriage promise and highlights the serious emotional and financial consequences faced by individuals who are left heartbroken or financially affected by such a breach.
