Samsung Electronics Co-CEO Han Jong-Hee Dies At 63

Samsung Electronics co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee, has passed away at the age of 63 following a cardiac arrest, a spokesperson for the South Korean technology giant confirmed on Tuesday.

Han, who was born in 1962, had been an integral part of Samsung for more than 37 years. He took charge of Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices businesses in 2022 and was named the vice chairman and co-CEO of Samsung Electronics in the same year. His co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, oversees the company’s semiconductor division.

Samsung paid tribute to Han in an internal message, highlighting his immense contribution to the company, particularly in leading Samsung’s TV business to global prominence. Han also played a pivotal role in the growth of Samsung’s electronics and appliance sectors, despite facing challenging business conditions.

The company expressed its deepest condolences to Han’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, noting his significant impact on Samsung’s success. “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the company said in the message.

Han’s leadership at Samsung came during a period of economic uncertainty. At an annual investor meeting last week, which he chaired, Han addressed concerns about Samsung’s stock performance, acknowledging challenges ahead in 2025 due to global economic policies. He expressed the company’s commitment to pursuing meaningful mergers and acquisitions to drive growth, despite facing regulatory hurdles, particularly in the semiconductor sector.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 after earning a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Inha University. Before overseeing the electronics and mobile divisions, he had managed Samsung’s display operations, where he also played a key role in advancing the company’s technology.

His sudden passing marks a significant loss for Samsung and the tech industry as a whole.
