FCT Initiates New PHC To Boost Fight Against Tuberculosis

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Tinubu, has directed the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, to spearhead the establishment of a new Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Abuja aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery and improving the fight against tuberculosis (TB) in the region. The initiative is supported by the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike.

Senator Tinubu, who also holds the roles of Global and National Stop TB Champion, made this announcement during the observance of World Tuberculosis Day 2025 in Abuja. The event was a collaborative effort involving the Federal Ministry of Health, the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners.

In her address, Senator Tinubu underscored the importance of grassroots efforts in tackling TB, aligning with this year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” which was locally interpreted as “We Fit Run Am; A Collective Call for Action Against TB” to better resonate with the local communities.

“To support the fight against tuberculosis, I am committing ₦1 billion and approving the establishment of a Primary Healthcare Centre in Sauka Community. This initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at building an efficient healthcare system,” Senator Tinubu stated.

The new PHC is designed to become a pivotal resource for TB detection, treatment, and comprehensive healthcare services in the FCT, ensuring residents have access to timely and quality medical attention. Dr. Fasawe will oversee the project’s implementation with the support of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Dr. Fasawe expressed her gratitude to the First Lady for her commitment to eliminating TB, noting the dedication of FCT healthcare workers whose contributions have significantly improved the local health system.

“The establishment of the new PHC in Sauka is a monumental step toward enhancing healthcare services, strengthening TB control efforts, and ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all in the FCT,” she said.

The World Tuberculosis Day event also included an exhibition by the Public Health Department of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, as well as free TB testing for attendees.
