Stop Lying To Electorate, Emir Of Ilorin Tells Politicians

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has called on Nigerian politicians to always be truthful to the electorate. He urged public office-seekers to genuinely understand the people they intend to govern and be conscious of their struggles and needs.

The Emir made the call on Wednesday when a delegation from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, paid him a visit at his palace in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

Sulu-Gambari condemned the practice of some public office-seekers who, he said, would remain disconnected from the people until election time. He stressed that politicians must engage with the electorate before elections, not just when they seek votes.

“Politicians should not wait until elections are around the corner to engage with the people they intend to govern. They need to understand the needs and concerns of the people beforehand. Politicians should stop lying to the people. You can be honest and still win people’s hearts,” the Emir emphasized.

The Emir commended the SDP for their approach to politics, noting that their efforts to move around the country and understand the challenges faced by Nigerians were commendable.

He also offered his blessings to the SDP delegation, including the former Minister of Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalong, who was part of the visit.

Earlier, Prince Adewole Adebayo briefed the Emir about the SDP’s mission in Kwara State. He explained that the party was in the state to hold an Iftar and Ramadan lecture for the Muslim faithful.

Adebayo lamented that Nigeria, despite its vast resources, suffers from underdevelopment due to a lack of honesty among the nation’s leaders. He affirmed that the SDP’s mission is to serve both God and humanity, and they are committed to honesty in governance.
