15th Emir of Kano Bayero Cancels Planned Eid-el-Fitr Durbar, Cites Security Concerns
The embattled 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the suspension of his planned Eid-el-Fitr Durbar, citing security concerns and advice from key stakeholders.
In a late-night video statement on Wednesday, Bayero confirmed the cancellation, signaling a shift in his earlier intentions to host a separate Sallah Durbar. The announcement comes shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, approval to begin preparations for his own Eid celebrations.
Bayero explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with elders, scholars, and members of his Emirate Council. While acknowledging the cultural significance of the Durbar, he emphasized that it should not be held if it posed a threat to the peace and stability of the region.
“The Eid Durbar is not a do-or-die affair. If it poses any risk of unrest or disorder, then it is necessary to suspend it,” Bayero said.
He called on the residents of Kano to accept the decision in the interest of peace and urged Muslims to use the festive period to strengthen family and community bonds. Additionally, he congratulated the faithful for completing the Ramadan fast and prayed for divine blessings during the holiday season.
This cancellation comes amid the ongoing political and legal dispute over the Kano Emirate throne, with both Emir Bayero and Emir Sanusi II claiming the position after months of contention.
