Abducted Imo Catholic Priest Regains Freedom
Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, a Catholic priest who was abducted on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Ejemekwuru, Imo State, has regained his freedom.
Fr. Ubaechu’s release was confirmed in a statement signed by the Owerri Catholic Archdiocesan Chancellor/Secretary, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbarah, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. The statement did not specify whether a ransom was paid for the priest’s release.
The statement, addressed to Eminences, Very Rev Msgri/Frs, Religious Brothers and Sisters, and Men and Women of Goodwill, read: “I am directed to inform you that our priest, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, who was kidnapped on Sunday, 23rd March, has been released. He regained his freedom from his abductors today (Wednesday), 26th March 2025.”
“We thank God for His infinite mercy and for answering our prayers. We appreciate your fraternal solidarity and prayers. To God be the glory,” the statement continued.
Fr. Ubaechu, who serves as the parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church Izombe in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, was abducted while traveling on the Ejemekwuru Road in Oguta. He was en route to the Priests’ Annual Retreat when he was taken by kidnappers.
As of now, the Imo State Police Command has yet to issue a comment on the release of the priest.
Catholic faithful have taken to social media to celebrate the good news, sharing the update of Fr. Ubaechu’s release and expressing gratitude for his safe return.
