CODE Launches $5M Media Grant to Boost AI Reporting in Nigeria

Connected Development (CODE), a civil society organization, has launched a $5 million grant aimed at empowering journalists to report on the ethical and impactful use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.

The initiative was unveiled on Tuesday during a media dialogue and the official launch of the AI Reporting Initiative in Abuja.

At the event, CODE’s Chief Executive Officer, Hamzat Lawal, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in governance, public service delivery, and accountability. However, he also noted the associated risks, including algorithmic bias, data privacy concerns, and unequal access to public services.

“As an organization, we recognize the media’s crucial role in shaping public discourse and policy. That is why we are committing $5 million over the next five years to support journalists in investigating AI-driven solutions and challenges in Nigeria’s development landscape,” Lawal said.

The initiative aims to strengthen the media’s capacity by offering seed grants, training, and research opportunities for journalists to explore AI’s role across sectors such as health, education, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and transparency and accountability.

The launch event brought together media professionals, civil society groups, and technology experts to discuss how AI can be leveraged for social progress while ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in its application.

CODE’s leadership also reiterated its commitment to advocating for legislation that ensures AI serves the public interest while safeguarding citizens from potential harm.

The AI Reporting Initiative is expected to create a platform for journalists to lead national discussions on the ethical use of AI and its implications for Nigeria’s development.
