JUST-IN: 3 Die From Outbreak of Meningitis in Gombe
At least three individuals have died from an outbreak of meningitis in Gombe metropolis and several local government areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, revealed the news on Thursday during a press briefing at the State Emergency Operation Centre in Gombe. Dr. Dahiru confirmed that many cases had been reported across various areas of the state, and while three deaths were recorded, the remaining patients received treatment and were discharged.
The breakdown of reported cases includes:
- 11 suspected cases from Dawaki ward, with 2 confirmed positive
- 14 suspected cases from Kaltungo Local Government Area
- 12 suspected cases from Yamaltu-Deba, with 3 confirmed positive
- 8 suspected cases in Billiri, with 3 confirmed positive
- 7 suspected cases in Funakaye, with 4 confirmed positive
- 4 suspected cases in Shongom, with 3 confirmed positive
- 1 suspected case in Akko, confirmed positive
- 1 suspected case in Nafada, but not confirmed
- 1 suspected case in Dukku, confirmed positive
Dr. Dahiru detailed the symptoms of meningitis, which include severe headache, high fever, and neck stiffness, and urged anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at any general hospital in the state or at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital and Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe.
The commissioner warned that delayed treatment could result in serious complications, including convulsions, hearing loss, and even death.
In response to the outbreak, the state government has requested vaccines from development partners to help contain the situation and alleviate the suffering of the affected residents. Dr. Dahiru also encouraged people to stay hydrated, ensure proper ventilation in their homes, and take preventive measures to avoid contracting the disease.
