Sharia Law: We’ll Always Stand By Constitution — Makinde
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has clarified his administration’s position on the potential application of Sharia Law in some states of the South-West, including Oyo. He emphasized that his government will always stand by the Constitution, and will not oppose anything that aligns with its provisions.
Makinde made this statement during the 2025 Iftar programme organized by the Oyo State government. The event, held at the Presidential Lodge at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, marked the sixth such gathering since he became governor in 2019.
The clarification came in response to a media report suggesting that the Oyo State government would challenge the plan to implement Sharia Law in court. Governor Makinde clarified that his administration does not oppose the Sharia Panel and that individuals who wish to utilize it as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism are free to do so. However, he reiterated that the constitutional courts remain the ultimate authority for settling disputes.
He further stressed that while promoting religious harmony and unity within the state, his administration would not allow anyone to sow discord or cause religious disunity.
Addressing the issue of Sharia Law specifically, Makinde said, “I read in the newspaper that I would go to court for interpretation on the Sharia Panel, which is ongoing in Oyo. That is not my position. My position is that we will support anything that is in our Constitution.”
He drew a parallel with family dynamics, noting that in families, not every issue is taken to court, and elders often resolve disputes. Similarly, the Sharia Panel could serve as a mechanism for conflict resolution, but if its decisions require further enforcement or clarification, the constitutional court would still be the final authority.
The governor emphasized that the focus of his administration has been on long-term progress, such as road rehabilitation to last for decades, and he urged the public to stay vigilant as political season approaches. Makinde also expressed gratitude to the Islamic community in Oyo State for their prayers and support, which he said have contributed to the progress of his administration.
In his Iftar lecture, the Chief Imam of Oyo State Government House Mosque, Sheik Adebayo Bello Rufai, praised Governor Makinde for his steadfastness and good deeds, while also praying for continued success for his administration.
The event also saw commendations for the governor’s support for the Muslim community, particularly for his contribution to the reconstruction of the Rashidi Adesokan Mosque and his recent recruitment of teachers.
Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal concluded the event by commending Makinde’s leadership and appreciating all arms of government for their cooperation.
