US Health Department To Sack 10,000 Workers
The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced plans to lay off 10,000 full-time employees across various health agencies, a move that aims to reshape the nation’s federal health workforce, as confirmed by an HHS spokesperson on Thursday. This decision is part of an ongoing effort led by HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to streamline and restructure the department.
These job cuts add to the approximately 10,000 employees who voluntarily separated from HHS since President Donald Trump took office. The layoffs will impact various critical divisions within HHS, including those responsible for responding to disease outbreaks, approving new medications, and managing insurance programs for low-income Americans.
As a result of these changes, HHS will reduce its workforce by around 25%, shrinking from over 80,000 employees to 62,000. Despite the significant reduction in staff, the department will maintain five regional offices. According to documents reviewed, essential health services are expected to continue without disruption.
