Sowore Slams Delta College for Querying Student Over ‘Na Your Mama Be This’ Song, Viral Video
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences for issuing a query to Student Nurse Osato Edobor, accusing her of a “malicious act” for recording and posting a viral video of herself singing an unofficial response during a visit by the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, to the institution.
The incident occurred during the visit of Mrs. Tinubu on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribution of 10,000 Professional Kits to midwives. At the event, students were encouraged to chant “Na our mama be this o, we no get another one” to welcome the First Lady. However, a group of students, including Edobor, instead responded with “Na your mama be this oo ehh…,” which was interpreted as a rejection of Mrs. Tinubu.
The video quickly went viral on social media, prompting the school to take disciplinary action. The institution issued a query to Edobor, accusing her of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording and posting the footage on TikTok and Facebook, an action deemed a punishable offense under the school’s disciplinary guidelines. The query, signed by Provost Mrs. Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, gave Edobor 24 hours to explain why she should not face punishment.
In response, Sowore strongly criticized the school’s actions, describing it as an attempt to suppress free expression. He praised the students for their defiant response to Mrs. Tinubu’s visit, calling it an authentic expression of dissent in the face of what he described as the “repressive” nature of the current administration.
“The audacious nursing school students who suitably rejected Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, in that ‘Na Your Mama Be This’ song ought to be celebrated, but as is characteristic of this Tinubu repressive era, one of them is being targeted for sharing this charming rendition on her TikTok page,” Sowore wrote on his Facebook page.
He further vowed to offer both legal and physical support to Edobor, saying: “We will be providing backing to this lady with all our physical and legal might to ensure the authorities at Delta State College of Nursing Sciences do not perpetrate this egregious act of injustice, as an injury to one is an injury to all.”
