EFCC: Aisha Achimugu’s Investigation Unrelated to Atiku, Sanwo-Olu
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that the investigation into socialite Aisha Achimugu, who has been declared wanted, is not connected to her political affiliations but rather stems from a fraud case against her.
In response to media reports suggesting that the EFCC’s probe into Achimugu might be politically motivated, with links to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale issued a statement on Friday night.
He emphasized, “We wish to state unequivocally that the investigation into Achimugu has no correlation whatsoever with the two political figures. She is under investigation for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, and the commission has declared her wanted in connection with these allegations.”
The EFCC began its investigation into Achimugu in 2022. Despite her legal attempt to secure an injunction that would prevent the commission from arresting, investigating, or detaining her, the injunction was challenged and lifted by a Federal High Court in Abuja on February 19, 2025. The court ruled that no court had the authority to halt investigations conducted by the EFCC or any other law enforcement agency when there was reasonable suspicion or evidence of a crime.
The court also upheld the interim forfeiture order on Achimugu’s assets, which were believed to be proceeds from illegal activities, and dismissed her lawsuit as lacking merit.
Oyewale added, “This clearly shows that the EFCC’s case against Achimugu is entirely separate from any political involvement or transactions. The Commission is non-partisan and non-sectarian, and we encourage the public to trust in our professionalism without attributing any political motivations to our work.”
