Ex-Rivers Governor Fubara Accuses Nweke of Being Compromised and Spreading Lies
Suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has accused Dr. George Nweke, the immediate-past Head of Service (HoS) in the state, of being compromised and forced to fabricate lies about him.
Fubara made this accusation in a statement he personally signed, responding to allegations made by Nweke during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, March 28, 2025.
The suspended governor called it laughable that Nweke, as the former HoS, claimed to have knowledge of discussions regarding Fubara’s alleged support for Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s presidential bid in 2027. Fubara also dismissed Nweke’s claims about him orchestrating attacks on oil pipelines and national assets in the state, calling these allegations false.
Fubara’s statement read in part: “My attention has been drawn to a press briefing by the former Head of Service, Dr. George Nweke, aired on Channels Television on Friday, March 28, 2025. Ordinarily, I would not have responded to his claims, but I must correct the erroneous impression such allegations may create in the minds of the people, and the disaffection they could cause in the state and the country.”
He continued, “First, on the claim that Dr. Nweke was aware of my discussions and plans to support Bala Mohammed’s alleged 2027 presidential bid: It is laughable that Dr. Nweke would be part of any high-level political meetings as Head of Service, much more sitting in my alleged night meetings with Bala Mohammed and militants, as he claimed. None of such meetings ever took place.”
Fubara further stated, “The truth is that the world knew when Governor Bala Mohammed, as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, visited the state, and there was nothing secret about the visit.”
On the accusations of meeting with militants to plan attacks on oil pipelines, Fubara firmly denied any such activity, stressing, “It is ludicrous for Dr. Nweke to claim that he was aware of my meetings to encourage attacks on oil pipelines and other national assets in the state. I have never met with militants or any criminal groups to destabilize the state. On the contrary, I have been at the forefront preaching peace in the state, even amidst provocations.”
Fubara concluded by accusing Nweke of being compromised and using these false claims to fulfill promises made to those who may have bribed or coerced him. He urged the people of Rivers State and Nigerians at large to disregard Nweke’s statements, calling them “desperate attempts to discredit me and my administration and undermine the peace process led by Mr. President.”
