Ekiti Gov’t Engages 3 Airlines to Begin Commercial Flight Operations

The Ekiti State Government has entered into discussions with three major airlines in Nigeria to launch commercial flight operations at the State Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who made the announcement, emphasized that efforts are being made to ensure the airport operates 24 hours a day, making the route more competitive and accessible to airlines and passengers alike.

Speaking during the March edition of his monthly media chat, “Meet Your Governor,” Oyebanji expressed satisfaction with the state’s economic progress over the past two and a half years and vowed to continue working towards more sustainable development and improved living standards for Ekiti residents.

He explained that the state’s government aims to turn the Ekiti Airport into a major hub and a key driver of the local economy. The Governor highlighted that the airport would help attract investors, boost tourism, and facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce both domestically and internationally.

Governor Oyebanji expressed confidence that at least two airlines would begin operations at the airport, noting that efforts are underway to enhance the airport’s competitiveness. This includes the installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS), which will allow for 24-hour flight operations. The ILS system, which will enable safe landings during the night and in adverse weather conditions, is projected to cost around N4.6 billion. The Governor assured that the installation would be completed by the end of this year.

“The goal is to make the route profitable and attractive to airlines. If the route is profitable, airlines will bring their planes. We are also working hard to ensure the airport can run Hajj and Christian pilgrimage operations by next year,” Oyebanji stated.

In addition to the ILS system, the Governor announced the construction of a cargo shed at the airport to store farm produce and cash crops, making it a key facility for the export of agricultural products. He also thanked Senator Opeyemi Bamidele for his efforts in securing funding for the project through the national budget.

With these developments, Governor Oyebanji aims to transform Ekiti’s airport into a competitive, international-grade facility that can enhance the state’s economic growth and global connectivity.
