Deportation Of Nigerians Midway Not Acceptable, NCAA Tells International Airlines

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines, threatening sanctions for the deportation of Nigerian passengers or denying them boarding midway through their journey due to visa or travel restrictions.

The regulatory body voiced concerns over the growing number of complaints it has received from passengers who were sold tickets by airlines, only to be airlifted partway to their destinations and then deported back to Nigeria. The NCAA stressed that such actions were causing unnecessary distress to travelers and damaging the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Michael Achimugu, the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at NCAA, expressed dissatisfaction with these practices, saying, “These actions, which involve refusal of boarding or entry at intermediate/transit stops to some Nigerians due to visa/travel restrictions, are causing significant distress to passengers and tarnishing the reputation of the aviation industry in Nigeria.”

Achimugu emphasized that it was the responsibility of airlines to inform passengers about any potential barriers to entry at their destination before embarking on their journey. He added that passengers should never be placed in the situation of being denied entry or forcibly returned to Nigeria only after arriving at intermediate stops.

In the statement, the NCAA warned airlines that it would impose sanctions on those involved in such practices. These could include fines, suspension of operations, or other appropriate regulatory actions.

The NCAA also reminded international airlines that under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), it is a legal requirement to inform passengers of any potential travel restrictions or issues with admissibility before departure. Airlines must thoroughly screen travel documents and visa requirements before selling tickets or allowing boarding.

The NCAA’s warning emphasized that this is a crucial matter for the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation industry and the well-being of Nigerian passengers. Effective immediately, airlines found guilty of these practices will face regulatory consequences, including but not limited to fines or suspension of operations.

The NCAA has called for the cooperation of international airlines operating in Nigeria to maintain professionalism and uphold passenger rights.
