Sanwo-Olu Visits Independence Bridge Site, Apologises To Lagos Residents Over Severe Traffic Gridlock

On Thursday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the ongoing repair site at Independence Bridge in Bonny Camp, where he personally assessed the ongoing work and extended his apologies to Lagos residents for the severe traffic gridlock experienced the day before. The bridge, currently undergoing repairs, has been a source of significant traffic disruption, especially in recent days.

Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the frustration faced by commuters and explained that the decision to repair the bridge had been carefully planned over the past three years due to the deteriorating structural integrity of the bridge, which, if left unattended, posed a serious risk to public safety.

In his statement, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the repair work, although inconvenient in the short term, was crucial to safeguarding the lives of all Lagosians. He assured that the government was actively working with relevant agencies to mitigate the traffic congestion and find immediate solutions to ease the burden on commuters.

“I sincerely apologise to all Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday. I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who also moves through this city, I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted,” he said.

The Governor also mentioned that businesses and organizations should consider adopting flexible work arrangements, including remote work and hybrid models, to alleviate the pressure on the roads while the infrastructure repairs are ongoing.

The state government has pledged to deploy more traffic monitoring officials and security personnel to ensure smoother traffic flow and prevent further disruptions.

Sanwo-Olu concluded by reiterating his commitment to ensuring that Lagos remains a hub of progress and that the repair works will contribute to building a more resilient and responsive city.
